Depression is a common, biologically based illness that can impact anyone, regardless of their background. It can be triggered by a negative or stressful life event, such as a breakup, or it may appear without a clear cause, seemingly “out of the blue.” If you are experiencing sadness that persists longer than two weeks and interferes with your daily life, it is time to seek help. The good news about depression is that effective, empirically-supported treatments exist, including psychiatric medication and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). At the Health Psychology Center of New York, we offer CBT to adults with depression and other mood disorders.
In addition to these treatments, we frequently collaborate with psychiatrists when a combination of psychotherapy and antidepressant medication could be beneficial. If you do not already have a psychiatrist and would like to pursue medication treatment, we will refer you to our trusted colleagues. While we can make recommendations based on your needs and treatment preferences, the decision to seek psychiatric treatment is entirely yours.
Examples of mood disorders that we treat include:
We also offer Schema Therapy (ST), a type of CBT developed specifically for resolving chronic mood and interpersonal problems.
