Dr. Kate Herts is the CEO and Founder of The Health Psychology Center of New York, as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine. 

he established the center in 2021 with the vision of building a team of expert psychologists to provide evidence-based therapies tailored to meet the specific and urgent needs of children and adults with chronic medical conditions. Through invaluable conversations with patients, colleagues, and advisors, her vision has since expanded to encompass a global wellness community dedicated to creating a better world for all people with chronic illness.

About Dr. Kate Herts

Dr. Kate Herts is a licensed clinical psychologist in New York and New Jersey and the Founder of The Health Psychology Center of New York. She is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York Presbyterian Hospital. Her journey in health psychology began when she joined The Adolescent Leadership Council of Hasbro Children’s Hospital (TALC), a program that helps prepare teens with chronic medical illnesses for adulthood and independence. She studied psychological adaptation to medical illnesses such as cancer and cystic fibrosis during her doctoral studies with Dr. Annette Stanton, a world-renowned health psychologist.

For her dissertation research, Dr. Herts designed and evaluated a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy group for college students with chronic illness, showing significant benefits in managing illness and social connection. This research is the basis for the HPC-NY Virtual Coping with Chronic Illness Group for Young Adults.

Dr. Herts completed her clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Cognitive Therapy Clinic of Weill Cornell Medicine, providing treatment for a range of anxiety and mood disorders. She also worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, treating patients with cancer and their families, and developed expertise in perinatal mental health at the Payne Whitney Women’s Program at Weill Cornell.

After her fellowship, Dr. Herts joined the Weill Cornell Medicine faculty as an Assistant Professor of Psychology, treating hospital patients with diverse mental health concerns at the Collaborative Care Center and the Westchester Behavioral Health Center.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she provided urgent mental health interventions to frontline staff at New York Presbyterian Hospital as the Psychiatry Liaison for CopeNYP.

Dr. Herts continues to be an active member of the Weill Cornell community, providing teaching and supervision to psychology and psychiatry trainees.

Expertise & Areas of Focus

Dr. Herts specializes in treating adolescents and adults with chronic medical conditions, including cancer, cystic fibrosis, POTS, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, chronic Lyme disease, endometriosis, lupus, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and long-COVID. She is also experienced in treating trauma, anxiety, and depression in women and LGBTQIA+ individuals, using evidence-based psychological treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Processing Therapy for chronic-illness induced PTSD.
